Circolo

For Soprano Saxophone and Piano Quintet

Duration: 0 mins 40 seconds approx.

Composer's Note

This miniature plays on the different meanings of the Italian word 'circolo'. Primarily, the word means 'circle', and this is refected in the four bar phrase (played by the soprano saxophone and the violin) which loops throughout the piece, whilst the work's other elements become more developed around it. The word's other meaning ('bar' or 'social club') is acknowledged in the light, playful, and even inconsequential spirit of the music, the brevity of the work making it a little like a musical aperitivo.

Circolo was composed for FACE THE MUSIC and premiered in New York City as part of the Fifteen Minutes of Fame concert series.
