Composer's Note

In the Golden Shadows of Dawn is a response to Giovanni Pascoli's Alba Festiva from the collection, Myricae (1891-1903). The poem onomatopoeically evokes the sound of bells in the morning air and alludes to their role in signifying both love - in the form of marriage - and death. My piece sets the words "Adoro, adoro - Dilla, dilla" in various ways within a rhapsodic structure which contrasts energetic, celebratory material with more processional and funereal sections.

This piece was composed for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's Composer's Hub and was workshopped publicly under the supervision of composer, Brett Dean by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Jean-Claude Picard on 23rd April 2016. It has since been recorded by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Mikel Toms.
