Peter Longworth on 'Nocturne and Masquerade'
Hebrides Ensemble commissioned composer Peter Longworth to compose a piece for our 100/350/100 concert series of May 2018. In this short film, Peter explains how, like Debussy, he is influenced by the Italian Commedia dell'arte. His piece, 'Nocturnes and Masquerades' is based on frescoes of Pulcinella, a central character in Commedia dell'arte, by Italian artist Giandomenico Tiepolo.
Peter Longworth - Arabesque
As the title suggests, Arabesque is a rather ornate piece in which virtuosic material is juxtaposed with lilting, dance-like episodes. Although there is no programme behind the music, I had in mind two things whilst composing: firstly, the flute's association with the world of ancient mythology, and secondly, a beautiful walk that my wife and I took in the Giardino di Boboli in Florence. Biography Peter Longworth's music has been performed internationally in countries including the USA, Canada, Japan, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as in UK venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Cadogan Hall, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, St John's Smith Square and St Martin-in-the-Fields. Ensembles who have performed his music include the London Mozart Players, the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, and members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
