Peter Longworth on 'Nocturne and Masquerade'
Hebrides Ensemble commissioned composer Peter Longworth to compose a piece for our 100/350/100 concert series of May 2018. In this short film, Peter explains how, like Debussy, he is influenced by the Italian Commedia dell'arte. His piece, 'Nocturnes and Masquerades' is based on frescoes of Pulcinella, a central character in Commedia dell'arte, by Italian artist Giandomenico Tiepolo.
Arabesque performed by Conrad Marshall of Psappha Ensemble. As the title suggests, Arabesque is a rather ornate piece in which virtuosic material is juxtaposed with lilting, dance-like episodes. Although there is no programme behind the music, I had in mind two things whilst composing: firstly, the flute's association with the world of ancient mythology, and secondly, a beautiful walk that my wife and I took in the Giardino di Boboli in Florence.
